Arabian desert packaging

TSMGO created the lovely Arabian desert packaging for La Queleña

“Using a graphic code that reminds us of the Arabian value of the origin of the dessert (the use of almonds is important in all Arabian desserts) a frame was created in which each of the packaging models reinforces the visual coherence of the whole range, making the provenance and birth of the recipe more understandable.”

Doha International Airport wayfinding pictograms

Posted by rod - 09.10.2014

Doha International Airport wayfinding pictograms

“Italian design studio FM milano worked on the wayfinding, pictogram system and the decorations (wall partitions, wall engravings, carpets, curtains etc.) of all the lounges and the public activity nodes of the New International Hamad Airport in Qatar.

Designing a complex identity for large public spaces requires a workflow that involves coordinated complexity. Avoiding the trap of customizing each element of the project with its own distinct peculiarly. studio FM milano has created a system that generates differences within the same family. Starting from the generating stam cell of a simplified master plan of the airport, we ensured a coherent language to the entire identity.

We took inspiration from traditional arabesque decoration to create the basic alphabet for everything. By turning the simplified plan around a center with different angles and points of rotation, we generated a grid for the distinctive pictogram set and for all the patterns that identify all the different spaces of the airport. The interior design project is by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel & Partners.”

Dubai map illustration by Josh Cochran for Better Homes

Dubai map illustration by Josh Cochran for Better Homes

Dubai based design studio Moloobhoy & Brown were approached by Better Homes to create a one dimensional map of Dubai as part of the ongoing brand refresh. Together with New York illustrator Josh Cochran they created a playful and detailed Dubai map illustration. The team explored the extreme clichés of Dubai, together with showcasing the various districts of the city and the very different personalities and characteristics married to each of those areas.

“From vibrant Downtown and Marina, to the older district of Deira around Dubai Creek. The fantasy hotels, villas on the Palm, racecourse, ski slope, bustling sidewalks at the base of the city’s skyscrapers and more importantly the people that make this city buzz. There is something for everyone to discover.”

Habibis – Arabic-Mexican fusion taqueria identity

Posted by rod - 29.10.2013

Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico, Habibis is a fusion restaurant between Arabic and Mexican. The taco stand approached Anagrama to create a brand identity that adapts stylised Arabic calligraphy to a typical Mexican street setting.

“Deep research and careful understanding of the Arabic alphabet was needed to design, using calligraphic pens and special brushes, the various words and signage in both Arabic and Latin. The custom type is accompanied by Gotham, a gentle and neutral typeface that would allow the bespoken logotypes to stand out above everything else. The pattern is based on traditional keffiyeh (a Middle Eastern headdress fashioned from a square scarf) and gorgeously intrinsic mosaic patterns.”

I quite like the identity but I miss the Mexican influence in the identity after all thats what makes the place unique

The Modern Arabic Machine installation

Posted by rod - 18.04.2013

The Modern Arabic Machine installation The Modern Arabic Machine installation

This is quite an interesting installation by Mounir Fatmi. I love the animated arabic typography that forms the machinery.

“mounir fatmi’s oeuvre has often displayed a fraught relationship to architecture, addressing the dystopic effects of the modernist experiment or arrogant contemporary displays of power and economic might. “Modern Times” explores architecture in the Middle East, raising the question of the human impact of this unrelenting construction machine.

The artist is sympathetic to Chaplin’s character, whose slapstick encounter with the factory machine suggeststhe human obstacle to a perfectly streamlined, mechanical production. mounir fatmi explains: “I want to be the product that the machine fails, otherwise one will think that the machine is perfect”

Norwegian brewery Nøgne ø which means (naked island) is a rather experimental brewery located in Grimstad, Norway. One of their one off beers caught my eye the other day called Dark Horizon 2. edition. It was the design of the beer label that impressed me. The 2nd edition of Dark Horizon label features a lion created out of Arabic calligraphy which is printed over the “Ø” mark. I couldn’t find anywhere, why they feature Arabic calligraphy on the label but I guess it is the Arabic coffee taste mixed with beer which is gave the designers the idea.
