Posted by rod - 10.04.2014

Appenzeller Alpenbitter a Swiss classic

Emil Ebneter founded the Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG in 1902. He opened a spirit store and created alcoholic drinks which one couldn’t drink anywhere else. One of these drinks was the famous Appenzeller Alpenbitter that  uses a total of 42 selected herbs. The recipe has remained unchanged ever since the beginning and is a well-kept family secret. The drink which originates in the Appenzell canton in the northeast of Switzerland. The label design was inspired by the iconic alpine hut Gasthaus Aescher – Wildkirchli which is situated in Appenzellerland.

Swiss papercutting art applied on Cailler chocolate packaging

Swiss papercutting art applied on Cailler chocolate packaging

Premium Swiss chocolate manufacture Cailler commissioned Swiss artist Ueli Hofer to create a some what different packaging design for Cailler’s Ambassador range. Ueli is a master of the ancient Swiss folk art of papercutting called “Scherenschnitt” in German. Instead of taking beautiful pictures of chocolate which are at the end Photoshoped he took his scissors and a cut out typical swiss motives such as cows, trees and motives in addition to the Maison Cailler building. The end result is a beautiful paper cut packaging design that definitely pops out from the shelf, I guess thats why I found it back in Geneva airport. Check out these two project for more papercutting inspiration. Swiss dark side, and Swiss Hot Chocolate packaging.

Forget the time in SwitzerlandForget the time in Switzerland

Switzerland is world renown for its clocks, and watches. But time in Switzerland can come to a standstill when you forget all about it — during holidays in the snow, on beautiful winter hiking trails with stunning Alpine panoramas, in comfy ski huts and wonderful wellness hotels.

The Swiss tourism association launched its lasted winter campaign called “Clocks”. The advert features once more the two typical Swiss alpine men. This time they get rid of all the clocks around a alpine village so that you can forget about time and relax. As the end slogan says “We do everything for a relaxing winter holiday.”

If you have a little bit more “time”, have a look at these three Swiss tourism campaign:

Who doesn’t love Swiss Hot chocolate? Salt Lake City graduate Jill De Haan recently completed this Swiss hot chocolate packaging design which draws its inspiration from the Swiss “Scherenshnitt” paper cutting style. Another good example of this style can be seen on the poster design from Alberto Russo called “The dark side of Switzerland“.

Corona in Switzerland

Corona in Switzerland commercialCorona in Switzerland commercial

This Corona commercial is a great cross cultural mix, that merges Swiss and Mexican cultures together.

The commercial goes as follows: In the clock obsessed country a Corona truck stops near a clock repair shop. As the tuck stops, all the cuckoo’s clocks stop too. After a second or two all the clocks start working again but they start singing the La Cucaracha song that became popular in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. The truck continues thorough the country and where ever the truck passes by the clocks or people start singing the song. Thanks to Walliman Emanuel for the tip.

*No paper was harmed during the making of this film. from Tommaso Minnetti on Vimeo.

This installation was created by Alberto Parise and Giovanni Pasini who’s idea is to bring together Swiss and Italian designers to collaborate and celebrate the shared design heritage, hence the heading Italian Design is coming home. The entire setup was constructed out of 30 different colors and types of paper. The two and a half meter wide sculpture took one month to construct. If anyone can tell me what the two (Swiss – Italian) connecting cities are called I would be grateful. via caroleguevin

This is the identity for the Swiss national day celebration which was created by Geneva based design studio gvastudio “The design examines the themes of unity and diversity through thirty chromatic variations of the Swiss flag.
For whatever his/her origins, each inhabitant expresses his/her own way of life in Switzerland.
Here the Swiss flag relates the value of collective solidarity with the personality of each inhabitant.”
