The Absolut Moscow limited edition bottle was created by Russian Fashion icon Alena Akhmadullina together with the Cocoon group. Cocoon explains that the design of the label focuses on Russians’ own perception of their capital as a meeting of the traditional and the modern, rather than  the cliches that foreigners identify with the city of Moscow.

Moscow designer Vova Lifanov created the identity for the russian museum of shawl in Pavlovsky Posad. The russian shawl has been part of the Russian identity for many decades, know around the world for their rich national ornaments. The museum’s symbol combines two assets, the first and most obvious one is the shawl and the second one is the letter”M” which is the first letter of the logo. The shawl was also used as a graphical element which is present on various items such as shopping bags, books, cups and pins.

Belarusian chocolate design

Belarusian chocolate packaging design

You don’t see Belarusian chocolate design everyday. Therefore I am quite happy to have stumbled across this design at typophile. The chocolate bar design is a holiday special, and the girl resembles Снегурочка/Snegurochka – the Snow Maiden, one of the helpers of Father Frost, the Russian Santa Claus. The Snow Maiden is one of the main New Year/Christmas/Winter folklore figures of the region, who in this case wears a traditional Russian headwear called кокошник/Kokoshnik.

A trip begins when you dream it – Russia

A trip begins when you dream it - Russia siberia

A trip begins when you dream it: This is the Siberia, Russia illustration that was illustrated by Mexican Graphic designer Jose Guizar. Also worth checking out is the Italian version.

“A trip starts when you start dreaming about it. Imagine you could win $20,000 dollars to make a trip, any trip, anywhere, with whoever and just the way you want it; by using your MasterCard abroad as much as you can, no matter the amount of your purchases.

I —with the help of my wingman D!— created this two illustrations as the key graphics for a MasterCard campaign proposal. The idea was to illustrate in a playful way the dynamic of purchasing small things that can take you to a dream trip.”

Weighing over 400 tones the Caspian Sea Monster is a marvel of the Soviet Union (Russia). The airplane/hovercraft travels over the surface and can travel at high speeds. During the 1960s a American spy satellite photographed a strange object and the Americans scratched their heads of what it could be. Check out more pictures here.

Russian Pelmeni packaging

Russian design agency Clever had the honor to work with Sibirskaya, a brand of Russian Pelmeni (Russian Meat Dumplings). The packaging design’s visual language was built up by folk art and symbols of Siberia.

“The point we think to be important creating a new brand of pelmeni is to avoid cliché. This fact inspired us to build up a unique visual language based on our rethink of folk arts and authentic symbols of Siberia. We created graphics to tell a story of lifestyle of native Russians. The story tends to be close to consumers.

Sibirskaya is A brand that encompasses tradition and modernity. The blue  and the white colors both adds an uncluttered, contemporary feel and send us to Gzhel elements. The decorative ornament was inspired by the rich heritage of the Siberia, taking the values of tradition and excellence a step further. The idea of pure, 100% Russian product with contemporary design.” via thedieline

To commemorate his accomplishment the soviet union (Russia) organized was one of the most covert propaganda campaigns of the twentieth century? The Soviet conquest is supported by numerous posters and photos which you can check out in the PNK edition. I have also added some more posters of the event below. Thanks to NKG for the tip.

Smirnoff Black – Matrioska Invaders – SPEC from Director Kobayashi on Vimeo.

Interactive designer Kobayashi created this amazing animation called Smirnoff Black – Matrioska Invaders.

“My inspiration was to clash a popular Russian symbol with Milan’s famous locations.
I did a manga restyling to the classic matrioskas’ look to make them original and cool.
All the dolls and the bottle are in 3D CGI, composited over real footage.

I’ve personally took care about all the production phases, thanks to my 360° skills.
From creativity to shooting, from 3D animation to editing and compositing.”

Branding the Nenets autonomous region

Posted by rod - 30.03.2011

Rebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous regionRebranding the Nenets autonomous region

One of the most outstading projects of Notamedia company is a rebranding for Nenets autonomous region (NAR). This is one of the first examples of a complex area branding in Russia. The concept of a new brand was put in to words “Nenets autonomous region is the North European pantry of Russia”. This definition emphasizes district’s Northen (unlike Komi Republic) and European (unlike Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region) location and it’s plenty of strategic reserves of mineral resources.

Previously NAR’s symbols lacked the logo; there were only emblem and flag. The concept of a logo that was developed is based on cultural characteristics of the region, key and the most typical trends of its economical activity. The tent represents concern for people’s welfare; the horns of a deer symbolize reindeer breeding, the fish image means fishing and the drop of oil stands for crude oil production.

The icons designed as elements of Nenets traditional folk ornaments. The logo’s shape not only matches ornaments general pattern but also resembles the geografical shape of the region, the horns of the deer and a flying bird at the same time. The identity proved to be dynamic and friendly: these symbols could be easily used to implement any idea within the limits of original style.

The agency has also published a brendbook, which describes the brand concept, the principles of its useage and development strategy.

Kizhi Pogost

Posted by rod - 03.02.2011

The Kizhi Pogost is an exceptional church, dating back to the 18th and 19th century. Located on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia (Russia) it is one of the tallest wooden buildings of the Russian North. The pogost is the area inside a fence which includes two large wooden churches (the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church) and a bell-tower. According to the Russian carpentry traditions of that time, the Transfiguration Church was built of wood only with no nails. In 1990 Kizhi Pogost was included in the UNESCo list of World Heritage sites.
