Posted by rod - 19.06.2013

24 hours in berlin, Germany illustration by Patrick Hruby

Each month Qatar’s inflight magazine Oryx features a 24 hours in… article accompanied by a lovely illustration that represents the city. In the June 2013 issue the focus is on a comprehencive 24 hours in Berlin guide. So what would you do if you had 24 hours in the German capital?

“Berlin is much more than the wall that divided it 40 hers ago.”

As you can see in Patrick Hruby’s illustration there is a ton of things to do and see. One of the best ways I feel to see the city is by bike. Not only do you exercise but you also get a better sense of direction absorb the culture, history and you will feel like a local. Sights you shouldn’t miss out are the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Oberbaum bridge, all the lovely museums and of course the Berlin Wall.

If you do visit, don’t forget to eat a curry wurst. Also check out the 24 hours in Munich illustration

Old Guard british beer packaging design

As the name and the packaging design already hint the Old Guard is a is a British inspired beer. Most people who have visited Buckingham palace or have read about London have come across the Queen’s Guard’s. The guards are easily identified by their black bearskins, red uniforms and emotionless face expression. Russian design agency Viewpoint worked on the visual concept of the English beer which is meant for the Russian Market. The taste of each beer is differentiated by the form and colour of the moustache, giving each packaging a different distinction and character. Whilst the design represents an british age-old tradition the aluminium can add’s the modernity.

Glasgow Map by illustrator Brent Couchman Glasgow Map by illustrator Brent Couchman Glasgow Map by illustrator Brent Couchman

Situated on the River Clyde Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. Illustrator Brent Couchman created a Glasgow map for Herb Lester Associates.

“As ever, it was our intention to document the usual and the unusual, and so there are record shops, cafes, pubs, restaurants, and inevitably a fish and chip shop – albeit one with an opera-singing proprietor. The 50 entries show just some of what Glasgow has to offer, glorious parks, beautiful architecture, great food and drink, and a notably charming and friendly populace.

Among the highlights: unchanged 1960s pub, The Doublet, Glasgow Architectural Salvage Yard, art deco restaurant and oyster bar, Rogano, and the excellent record shop, Monorail.”

You can buy the A3 map here.

US designer Janina Kao recently redesigned the identity and packaging for the French dessert shop, Laduée. Before the redesign the shop had a feminine and floral design impression and didn’t have a deli. The new identity focuses on typical classic French style design elements such as the rooster, the colors red blue and white and the background ornamentation. The deli packaging was printed on mustard colored paper that is warm and soft, unlike other everyday food wrapping.

2nd year design student Harant Petrosyan recently completed his thesis at the YSUAC in Armenia where he explored Armenian cultural identities. Harent was interested and felt it was necessary to present Armenian cultural figures as a common system of graphic symbols. Armenia’s cultural figures range from prehistoric bronze statues to today’s pop icons and cultural influencers. The end result was nine graphic images, which were applied onto stamps.

Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map

Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map Hand drawn Vintage but Modern Old London Map

Anna Butler is the chief designer at Wellingtons Travel. She is an artist and architect by trade and of British-Polish descent. Taige Zhang is a lover of travel, history, and maps; also a cartographer. They started working on creating a hand drawn vintage but modern old London map in 2008.

“We believe in the beauty, allure and craftsmanship of old maps. In 2008, we started researching remarkable maps from the 16th to 19th Century from legendary explorers and cartographers such as Joan Blaeu, Captain James Cook, and Joseph Cross. Drawing qualities and inspiration from city maps by British cartographers of the early 1800s, we began work on the Grand Map of London using various existing up-to-date geographic data sources including those from open street map.

As a hobby and business, we produce maps of modern cities in historic, beautiful 1800s style. Our maps are made to enchant anyone who loves history and appreciates art. Some of our top customers include City of London, bookshops, galleries and hotels.”
