Dutch Mafia Project

Posted by rod - 18.03.2014

Dutch Mafia Project

The Dutch Mafia font and icon set is a self promotional project created by Michael Nÿkamp

The Dutch Mafia font and icon set was born from my experiences growing up in a Dutch immigrant family in a predominately Dutch community in Ontario, Canada. The letterforms and symbols recall the unique traditions and images of my childhood, including delft pottery, Sinterklaas, oliebollen, wooden shoes, and mini windmills sitting out on front lawns as garden ornaments.

The Dutch Mafia font and icon set was a self-initiated project. I wanted the style to be simple, ornamental in nature, and amusing–the sarcasm with which it illustrates Dutch culture is completely intentional. At its heart, I hope the font and icon set conveys my enjoyment of, and fondness for, Dutch cultural traditions and objects.

Amsterdam Railway System takes a motif from tulip, the Dutch symbol. With the Centraal Station at the center, lines of tram, metro, and railway spreads out like the stamen and pistil of the flower. The IJssel (Het IJ, river) forms the petals, and layers of fan-shaped canals complete the tulip. Designed by zero per zero via theeuropeanpost

Dutch Lady was established in Malaysia in the 1950s, and started off by importing sweetened condensed milk form its parent company in Holland. The brand is now one of South East Asia’s leading dairy producers. Chris Mitchell was commissioned by Design Bridge to redesign the iconic milk lady, who wears a traditional Dutch costume with the iconic clog shoes, Dutch bonnet and dress. He stays that: “strong lighting from the left was key in not only helping to create flowing form within the figure but also in projecting a clean fresh enticing and healthy feel.”

Last summer 22 artists and designers from Egypt, Netherlands and the Middle East gatherd in Amersrdam to design the first Arabic travel guide to the Netherlands. The project was set up by the Mediamatic foundation.

Maajoun guided the design team through the project, which was responsible for the identity and the travel guide. Throughout the project the design team had several challenges such as grid and typography, as well as a system for reading two different languages in parallel, each of which has its own reading direction. Head over to Maajoun for the full article.

PostNL Identity

TNT Post changes its brand name to PostNL

Most Europeans most probably have seen a TNT truck cruising around their country every once in a while, likely not giving it more thought than the bright orange letters (TNT). From the 31st of May, TNT Post will continue as an independent mail company under the new name PostNL. The identity will be applied first in the Netherlands, and then abroad.

“Our new name PostNL symbolises the reliability and down to earth approach of our company. This name does justice to our past, something we are very proud of. By the same token we emphasise that we are a true Dutch company, with ambitions that go beyond mail and operations that reach beyond our borders. Our three-sided logo symbolises the heart of our company, with mail, parcels and e-commerce at the core.” via brand new

Coat of Arms of the Netherlands

Posted by rod - 15.09.2010

“The Greater Coat of Arms of the Realm, (or “Groot Rijkswapen”), is the personal coat of arms of the monarch of the Netherlands (currently Queen Beatrix). The government of the Netherlands uses a smaller version without the mantle (cloak) or the pavilion or sometimes even only uses the shield and crown. The components of the coats of arms were regulated by Queen Wilhelmina in a Royal decree of 10 July 1907 and were affirmed by Queen Juliana in a Royal decree of 23 April 1980.” via wiki

Daelmans Holland

Posted by rod - 21.07.2010

In 1909 Daelmans started producing cakes for the general public of Netherlands the company since then has expanded worldwide. I especially love the Stroopwafels which are made from two round waffles with a sweet syrup or caramel filled in-between. Stroopwafels are an old Dutch speciality invented in Gouda in 1784 and are still sold and made the traditional way at the local markets. Images vie flickr and babytjes
