Nostalgic Pembrokeshire coast travel poster designs

Posted by rod - 05.05.2014

London based design agency Hatched brought back the nostalgic travel poster design style with these Pembrokeshire coast national park summer and autumn campaigns. Hatched had to come up with a campaign that would not only promote the park’s natural beauty, coastline and abundant wildlife but also stand out in a competitive marketplace.

“The inspiration behind the posters was the style of the travel posters of old. We feel the beautiful vibrant colours and simple sans serif typography produces visually striking posters that still don’t look out of place, even after all these years.”

The campaign focuses around key railway stations to encourage people to visit Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.

If you like these posters you should check out Andy Tuohy illustration work.

Old Guard british beer packaging design

Posted by rod - 11.06.2013

Old Guard british beer packaging designOld Guard british beer packaging designOld Guard british beer packaging design Old Guard british beer packaging design Old Guard british beer packaging design

As the name and the packaging design already hint the Old Guard is a is a British inspired beer. Most people who have visited Buckingham palace or have read about London have come across the Queen’s Guard’s. The guards are easily identified by their black bearskins, red uniforms and emotionless face expression. Russian design agency Viewpoint worked on the visual concept of the English beer which is meant for the Russian Market. The taste of each beer is differentiated by the form and colour of the moustache, giving each packaging a different distinction and character. Whilst the design represents an british age-old tradition the aluminium can add’s the modernity.

Anna Butler is the chief designer at Wellingtons Travel. She is an artist and architect by trade and of British-Polish descent. Taige Zhang is a lover of travel, history, and maps; also a cartographer. They started working on creating a hand drawn vintage but modern old London map in 2008.

“We believe in the beauty, allure and craftsmanship of old maps. In 2008, we started researching remarkable maps from the 16th to 19th Century from legendary explorers and cartographers such as Joan Blaeu, Captain James Cook, and Joseph Cross. Drawing qualities and inspiration from city maps by British cartographers of the early 1800s, we began work on the Grand Map of London using various existing up-to-date geographic data sources including those from open street map.

As a hobby and business, we produce maps of modern cities in historic, beautiful 1800s style. Our maps are made to enchant anyone who loves history and appreciates art. Some of our top customers include City of London, bookshops, galleries and hotels.”

Up and coming British graphic designer Petros Afshar participated in the annual Student design competition RSA, submitting a series of stamp designs for the Royal Mail.

The concept was to create a series of stamps highlighting british inventions through use of imagery and typography. Each stamp represents a form of tranportation or machinery, invented by British pioneers. From the first ‘true’ bicycle, to the steam engine, steamboat, piloted glider, tank and locomotive, these inventions were all selected carefully when taking into consideration which UK firsts were to be presented as a series. The use of typography was added as a final touch in order to depict the inventions title and date of origin.

P&G committed themselves to a 10-year partnership with the Olympic Movement, becoming one of the top worldwide sponsors. The first campaign was launched in Vancouver and in 2012 Procter & Gamble together with Landor continued building on the London Olympic campaign. Landor was asked to create a visual system for this huge world wide campaign, using the host city and its famous London tube as inspiration for its “road to glory” concept.

“The road to glory is the journey of hopeful Olympians and the devoted mothers who helped them to become athletes—like the first-time Olympic swimmer and her mom who drove her to practice throughout childhood. The visual graphic at the heart of the campaign’s design is a medallion inspired by Olympic medals. The flexible design of the ribbon allows each brand and region to personalise the campaign.”

I have seen and featured quite a few london maps, such as the London converse map but none of them has been so detailed. British illustrator Jenni Sparks recently completed a super detailed hand drawn London map with Evermade. The brief was to produce a map that would capture the essence of London’s landmarks, from the famous to the local. The map is full of surprises such as celebrity birthplaces, local markets, social stereotypes and favourite pubs.

Danish designer Muggie Ramadani designed the brand identity for Estatum and a book that promotes the great in Great Britain. The headings which accompany the photographs are my favorite. They really highlight the Britishness and the great opportunities that Britain has got.
