2nd year design student Harant Petrosyan recently completed his thesis at the YSUAC in Armenia where he explored Armenian cultural identities. Harent was interested and felt it was necessary to present Armenian cultural figures as a common system of graphic symbols. Featuring fonts such as Fedra Sans Armenian is always a pleasure here on CreativeRoots. Not only does CreativeRoots inspire people from around the world but also point you into the right direction regarding other useful resources which may be difficult to find.

The Fedra Sans Armenian was designed by Peter Biľak who also designed the Fedra Hindi and Tatevik Aghababyan.

“Armenian is the official language of the Republic of Armenia and is widely spoken by the communities of the Armenian Diaspora. Aybuben, the Armenian alphabet is a distinctive script, an alphabet with 38 letters and 5 ligatures, which was created in the 5th century specifically for writing the Armenian language. Fedra Sans Armenian applies the basic design principles of the Fedra font family to the Armenian alphabet, making it suitable for use both in text and display typography. It includes the necessary ligatures and the currency symbol for the Armenian dram. Like all Typotheque fonts, it is Unicode-compliant.” You can buy the Fedra Sans Armenia here.

Here is a taster of some Armenian typography which I found on armenotype via ministryoftype. Amenotype, is a new site which is dedicated to the Armenian script and alphabet. The project is still in its early days but more content is supposed to be added. I am happy to see more projects and work emerging from that corner of the world.
