The last speaking man who speaks Zaparo

Posted by rod - 05.09.2013

Keeping an ancient language alive can be quite tricky especially when you are stuck in the rainforest with only a few people around you. In this case Zaparo is the endangered Ecuadorian language which is spoken by Ushabi. The ministry of Heritage of Ecuador decided to intervene in oder to preserve the language together with Ad agency Grey. Similar to the Cameroon Busuu language Zaparo received a song that was created by Juan Fernando Velasco. Juan Fernando translated his hit songs “Yo naci aqui”, a song about national pride and loving your country into Zaparo.

The song received plenty of media attention and above all it got the people to sing in Zaparo.

Typographic project of the Ecuadorian Valdivia culture

Posted by rod - 27.08.2013

The Valdivia Culture is one of the oldest settled cultures recorded in the Americas. Back in 3500 BC and 1800 BC it thrived on the Santa Elena peninsula near the modern-day town of Valdivia, Ecuador. It was discovered in 1956 by Ecuadorian archeologist Emilio Estrada.

Ecuadorian designer Vanessa Zuniga was inspired by the culture and created a font called “Primordial Being”, icons and patterns based on the outlining of a ancient statue that resides in the Quito Museum Casa Del Alabado.

Ecuador is a fairly unknown country amongst it’s more familiar neighbours, Colombia and Peru. The Ecuadorian Ministry of tourism wants to finally put the country on the world wide map by using its 24 million tons of bananas that are exported annually worldwide. The new tourism campaign presents the Banana ambassador which uses its bananas as a mean to promote Ecuador. Each banana receives a sticker with a QR code on it that shows a promotional video of the country.
