A while ago six Danish opticians and a nurse from the opticians company Nyt Syn traveled out to Gambia and Senegal to perform eye tests and fitted the people with glasses. Over 70.000 people across Denmark donated their glasses which are now giving joy and happiness to all these people. Photographer Joachim Ladefoged took some amazing images of some of the lucky ones.via afroklectic.

Have you donated anything away in the past year?

Senegalese wrestlers

Posted by rod - 23.03.2010

Absolutely fantastic photographic series of Senegalese wrestlers photographed by award winning photographer Denis Rouvre. Senegalese wrestling, or laamb is a mixture of bare-fist boxing and conventional wrestling. The fighters are coated with potions to extract evil and wear tallismans in the hope for good luck. Traditionally, laamb was a sign of a young man’s talent and strength in order to attract a wife. via oitzarisme.ro and inspiredm.com

Here’s a statement from Bestenheider:

“Binta was inspired by Africa. Its sculptural shape evokes African wood carvings, but its polyurethane rubber forms are softer. Like a baobab tree, Binta anchors itself firmly to the ground with thick, trunk-like feet whose elegant forms bring to mind the weighty baobab. Its upholstery is a patchwork of Wax fabrics, the traditional textiles worn by African women. Contrasting patterns and colours emphasise the armchair’s shape, enveloping and moulding its silhouette. The brash, bright colour contrasts are in the tradition of African textiles and colour schemes; they conjure up the elegant tailoring of women’s clothes as if Binda were a Senegalese lady about to wear and enhance the hot colours of Africa”.
