in Africa business card design

Posted by rod - 15.09.2010

Monique Kneepkens created the business cards for “in Africa” this is what she has got to say about the project.
“I was asked to design new stationery for non for profit organisation ‘In Africa’. For this stationery, I have used traditional African symbols. These symbols are used and recognised in the whole of Africa, and all have different meanings, such as ‘freedom’, ‘iniative’, ‘support’, ‘co-operation’, ‘encouragement’ etc. All meanings that also agree with In Africa’s work and beliefs. Collaboration is one of In Africa’s key principles. To highlight that, I placed the african symbols on the back of the cards, but always 2 halves. Each staff member has a different back design, and only when you put the cards together (when they work together) the symbols become whole.”

African beach calligraphy doodles by Andrew van der Merwe. “The characters in this piece take their inspiration mainly from the Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The symbols are neither alphabetic nor pictographic like the Egyptian symbols, but rather stylized motifs which were used to convey a range of things from historical events to attitudes, objects and even proverbs. I just like the look of them and like to play with them. I seldom use them in a meaningful way. :-) However, what is meaningful for me here is how these symbols convey a sense of the graphic roots of human thought and language so easily forgotten in typical Western writing which is much more abstract. For example, the Adinkra symbol for patience, fondness and care is a wooden hair comb. Size: about 6x6m”
