The chukudu is an invention from the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo and is basically an oversized wooden scooter that goes Chu-ku-du, chu-ku-du, chu-ku-du. This funny looking traditional contraptions is manly used for transporting goods and people around.

New York based photographer Abby Ross captured these amazing photos of the people and their chukudu’s. The Washington Post has a great article if you want to read more about them.

The Ituri Forest Pygmies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are nomadic hunter-gatherers who rely on a healthy forest to survive. If the Forest goes, so go the Pygmies. Photographer Randy Olson took some incredible images of these people for the for National Geographic magazine featuring Africa to raise the issues which these people are facing at the moment.

Virunga national park logo – Congo

The Virunga National Park lies from the Virunga Mountains, to the Rwenzori Mountains, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, bordering Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda. Covering 7,800 square kilometres it was established in 1925 as Africa‘s first national park. It was classified as a World Heritage Site in 1979. In later years it has become known for its mountain gorillas.
