In Africa Christmas Card

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Monique Kneepkens came up with clever idea for In Africa. “This is the 2009 Christmas Card I did for In Africa. The font I designed is a contemporary take on traditional African art. I then wrote our christmas message in this font.

The receiver opened an envelope and found our card, an A3 poster, folded to A5. In the bottom there was a sticker with the In Africa logo, and the message ‘Wrapping the year with seasons greetings from the team at In Africa.’. The sticker was a peel-off. When the receiver peeled off the sticker the poster could be used as christmas wrapping paper, and that way we reinforced our sustainable approach.”

Africa Season at Darkroom

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Just found these awesome silkscreen prints which are inspired by Africa. Created for the Darkroom in London, England. “As part of our Into Africa season, we have an exhibition of limited edition prints and one-off artworks by a selection of designers and artists. Fashion designer David David has created a set of 3 prints based on African textile prints and beading. Leading interiors stylist Despina Curtis [Wallpaper*/Elle Decoration/Case Da Abitare] has produced an amazing set of overprinted African textiles each framed in a brightly coloured handpainted frame. Textile artist Lizzie Finn has designed and hand made 4 African mask wall hangings that double up as storage for bathrooms or hallways by way of built in pockets and hooks, and Darkroom director and designer Rhonda Drakeford has designed 2 prints based on the painting of the Ndebele tribe of South Africa.” via wallpaper

Senegalese wrestlers

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Absolutely fantastic photographic series of Senegalese wrestlers photographed by award winning photographer Denis Rouvre. Senegalese wrestling, or laamb is a mixture of bare-fist boxing and conventional wrestling. The fighters are coated with potions to extract evil and wear tallismans in the hope for good luck. Traditionally, laamb was a sign of a young man’s talent and strength in order to attract a wife. via oitzarisme.ro and inspiredm.com

Zulu wedding baskets

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Created by L’aviva home, the Zulu wedding baskets: these one-of-a-kind baskets, called ukhamba, are traditionally woven by the bride-to-be or given to the new couple as wedding gifts. during the zulu wedding, the baskets will be used to hold ceremonial beer.  the patterns are rooted in symbolism: diamond shapes are known as the “shields of shaka” and represent the male while triangles are known as the “spears of shaka” and represent the female. the elaborate designs and intricately-patterned baskets denotes the wealth and power of the family. each piece takes many weeks, or even months, to weave. via out and about africa
