The evolution on an American icon

The new brand identity of American Airlines has spread like wildfire throughout the internet, which hasn’t surprise me. It is one of the USA’s most iconic brands that has been around since the 1930’s and deffinitly earns a place on creativeroots.org. The fresh new look of American Airlines signals a positive step towards building a more modern travel experience for its customers and employees which were stuck with an outdated brand identity that hasn’t been updated for more than 40 years.

The old logo which was designed in 1967 by Massimo Vignelli is now replaced with Futurebrand’s modern 3D ‘flight symbol’ as they call it. The symbol combines several features of AA – an eagle, the red, white and blue livery the letter A, and a star.

“Our new logo and livery are designed to reflect the passion for progress and the soaring spirit, which is uniquely American,” said Virasb Vahidi, American’s Chief Commercial Officer. “Our core colours — red, white and blue — have been updated to reflect a more vibrant and welcoming spirit. The new tail, with stripes flying proudly, is a bold reflection of American’s origin and name. And our new flight symbol, an updated eagle, incorporates the many icons that people have come to associate with American, including the ‘A’ and the star.”

I really recommend you to check out the Behind the Scenes video which explains a little about the process of the rebranding.
