Every country has its heroes, India has Mahatma Gandhi, a tone of gods and perhaps its truckers. India’s truck culture is well established with each truck individually decorated with ornaments, flowers and hand written type saying Horn Please or other well established sayings.

Photographer Dan Eckstein traveled up and down the country documenting the different trucks, road conditions and ways to drive. Anyone who has visited India will know that lanes don’t really exist, side mirrors are not really used and the different means of transportation ranges from the simple horse-drawn cart to crazy truck drivers.

“Along the highway, one unmistakable feature is the brightly decorated trucks that ply the country’s roads. The men who drive these trucks spend long hours on the road and can be away from their families for weeks at a time so their trucks act as a second home and they take great pride in them. The interior and exterior of the trucks are colorfully decorated with paintings, stickers, garlands, tassels and shrines, which are not only a unique form of folk art but also an expression of individualism.”
