Have you ever wonder what happens when you combine traditional Norwegian woodcraft and skateboards? I haven’t, but the brothers Bjørndalssæter from Oppdal and Alexander Nässelqvist from Larvik did and the result is quite impressive and unique.
Running under the company Æ the skateboards are hand made by the brothers and are inspired by Norse mythology that incorporate dragons that are carved out of birch-wood. Wood carving has had a long tradition in Oppdal and now this ancient art is taking on new forms that could revitalise the industry to look into new markets.
In 2011 I reported about the Mumbai Skateboards which are also hand crafted and worth a look at. It is refreshing to see that modern and traditional cultures are being merged, to create something new and exciting.
Although it is in Norwegian there is an interesting video about the Æ skateboards on NRK. Also check out Æ’s facebook page.
Finished here? Then have a look at these.
