Three of New Zealands national identities are Air New Zealand, the silver fern and New Zealands All blacks rugby team. Combining the three and you’ll get a Black Air New New Zealand 777-300ER plane overlaid with New Zealands’s distinctive silver fern.

Air New Zealand unveils livery of its newest Boeing 777-300ER, the world’s largest commercially operated aircraft to be painted all black, touching down in New Zealand for the first time today at Auckland International Airport.

The aircraft’s all black paint job is overlaid with a design featuring New Zealand’s distinctive silver fern that extends across the rear of the aircraft up to its tail. The paint job was extremely complex requiring 14 expert painters at Boeing working in shifts 24 hours a day to get the job done. Painting of the aircraft is part of Air New Zealand’s sponsorship of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union and the World Champion All Blacks rugby team.

The Designworks design team went through some 30-35 initial concepts, using the blank plane as a canvas. The design was anchored around the concept of a visual signature that would truly ‘fly the flag’ for our nation’s carrier.  For this reason the silver fern was chosen, for both its iconic nature and simplicity as well as for being an integral part of New Zealand’s national identity. The original black plane designs were created for Air New Zealand’s A320 planes, which were then later translated to the 777-300 model.”

Make sure to see the All Blacks New Zealand packaging.
