In 1993 a Japanese team drew a cross-section of the amazing chaos of the Kowloon walled city before it got torn down. The Kowloon walled city was the only Chinese settlement allowed in the British territory of Hong Kong, which the Chinese wanted to be able to use as an outpost.
First after the World War II the Walled City became totally ungoverned. The average apartment was only 250 wquare feet, and there were 33,000 residents occupying the 6.5 acre region in 1987. More info here. Via oneinchpunch
