Absolut Consequence is an images created by Jessica Bryan for the Migrant Indigenous eXchange exhibition.

“Five of the top ten causes of death among Native Americans are related to alcohol. The main cause of alcoholism amongst Indigenous people is post-traumatic stress disorder. This is a condition in which isolation, fear, guilt, shame, depression, anger, irritability, and other symptoms follow a trauma. Native peoples’ history of oppression, as well as their present circumstances, result in a comparatively high risk of trauma. Conquest by lead to genocide, great poverty, and oppression of the First Nation population across the Americas, but until recently this oppression was not directly linked to Native American alcoholism. Native American youth face post-traumatic stress first-hand because in most cases their immediate family experienced the concentration camp existence of the first reservations; involuntary confinement at residential schools; or various other social, psychological, and spiritual insults. As a result of these factors, life expectancy for Native Americans is considerably lower than in the general population.

My imagery stems from Navajo sand paintings used by the early medicine men to heal the sick and restore good health. The combination of Indigenous sand painting and historical symbols with the contemporary Absolut Vodka ad parlance emphasizes the link between European oppression and Native American alcohol abuse.”
