Zulu wedding baskets
Posted by rod - 11.03.2010Created by L’aviva home, the Zulu wedding baskets: these one-of-a-kind baskets, called ukhamba, are traditionally woven by the bride-to-be or given to the new couple as wedding gifts. during the zulu wedding, the baskets will be used to hold ceremonial beer. the patterns are rooted in symbolism: diamond shapes are known as the “shields of shaka†and represent the male while triangles are known as the “spears of shaka†and represent the female. the elaborate designs and intricately-patterned baskets denotes the wealth and power of the family. each piece takes many weeks, or even months, to weave. via out and about africa
