Created by L’aviva home, the Zulu wedding baskets: these one-of-a-kind baskets, called ukhamba, are traditionally woven by the bride-to-be or given to the new couple as wedding gifts. during the zulu wedding, the baskets will be used to hold ceremonial beer.  the patterns are rooted in symbolism: diamond shapes are known as the “shields of shaka” and represent the male while triangles are known as the “spears of shaka” and represent the female. the elaborate designs and intricately-patterned baskets denotes the wealth and power of the family. each piece takes many weeks, or even months, to weave. via out and about africa
